Himalaya Herbals Refreshing & Clarifying Toner

July 25, 2016
Some years ago, I used to be obsessed with banishing every trace of dirt and makeup on my face. That's good, right? Well, of course! But what's bad is that I tended to use harsh astringents to do that. Not only was I more of a skin care newbie, but those astringents just worked so well that I kept using them!

What I didn't know though was that they were stripping my skin of necessary moisture and instead of helping me get rid of my then persistent acne, it would sometimes make it worse thanks to the high alcohol content they usually had. Thankfully, over time, I incorporated more gentle toners into my skin care regime and discovered that they worked just as effectively (if not better) minus the harshness.

The Himalaya Herbals Refreshing & Clarifying Toner is something I picked up on a whim. It being alcohol-free and targeted towards combination skin, which I have, sparked my interest!

Himalaya Herbals says, "An alcohol free formulation that deep cleanses pores and refreshes to keep your skin oil-free without over drying. Lentil deep cleanses pores, Citrus Limon a natural astringent and cleanser, tightens pores and Boerhavia Root extract controls excess oil secretion to leave your skin clear, soft and radiant."

Overall I would describe this as your average, basic toner. While it did stay true to its name and make my skin instantly feel softer and even more refreshed after washing my face, as well as help remove any remaining traces of dirt and whatnot, it didn't really do much more than that. I didn't notice a significant difference in my skin even after using up the entire bottle. My pores weren't minimized and my oil secretion 'levels' remained pretty much the same. At least it works pretty well at cleansing the face further after washing while still being quite gentle on skin and not stripping away any moisture. In fact, I think it actually restores at least some moisture back into the skin, especially if you used a face wash that's particularly drying. I wouldn't say it 'deep cleanses' the skin though, like it claims to do. Instead I feel like it just lightly and 'superficially' sweeps away any leftover dirt on your face. If you want a deep cleansing experience that'll involve 'pore purging', start by investing in a good face wash that works for you and make sure to spend time really working it into the skin. After all, your toner shouldn't be doing a lot of the work when it comes to cleaning your skin, it's your face wash that should! Also, take note that I do double/triple cleanse regularly, meaning I use a cleansing oil and/or wipe prior to washing my face so there is always very little chance for a lot of dirt or makeup to be left on my face anyway. If you stick to just a wipe then washing your face, and you tend to rely on your toner to remove any leftover impurities, you might need one that's a little more 'powerful' than this. I offer the same advice if you have oily skin and are looking for something to help control shine.

Important: This product contains 'Citrus Lemon' - a known irritant because of its extremely low pH level. If you have sensitive skin, make sure to patch test it first. Lemon also makes skin photosensitive so if you'll be under the sun right after using this toner, make sure to use a lot of sunscreen!

  • Makes skin feel slightly softer, refreshed, and restores some moisture after washing.
  • Able to lift or sweep away (light) traces of remaining dirt or makeup.
  • Did not minimize/tighten my pores nor control my oil production.
  • Affordably priced.
  • Contains 'citrus lemon' which can cause skin to be photosensitive as well as irritate sensitive skin.
